January 1st; dawning of a new year. With the NCC in full swing, January begins the bike month session, and the club kick started the session with a grand plan. Club member Chris Dabbs graciously offered the use of his flooring company warehouse for a mass gathering of triathletes & bike trainers with the goal of cranking out as many miles as possible.
Nothing gets the competitive juices flowing like an additional challenge to keep things lively. So in addition to our primary goal of getting a big lead on TCSD, the club board decided to up the ante and provide even more incentive to spin those legs. In addition, we knew our club members are very community minded and also relish the opportunity to give back and support a noble cause. We decided to make the ride a fundraiser for Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF, www.challengedathletes.org).
CAF’s mission is “to provide opportunities and support to people with physical disabilities so they can pursue active lifestyles through physical fitness and competitive athletics.” With this in mind, the board decided to sponsor a donation to CAF for miles ridden during the event, as well as including miles ridden by other NCC participants on that day. We also set out a donation jar for additional contributions.
The ride was an overwhelming success -- the warehouse was packed from early in the morning until the last riders were shooed out in the afternoon. Club member Debbie did a 2 HOUR spin class during the day to keep the motivation and spirits high while spinning those legs! There were several club members who ended up riding a CENTURY on their trainers, and many more who logged 50+ miles for the event.
In the end, donations were tallied and these generous Alaskans donated nearly $1000 to CAF and its mission! It was a great day, and we’re very proud of club members -- their spirit, motivation and generosity continue to awe and inspire us. |
